Portfolio: Thomson CompuMark — Online Ordering
Thomson CompuMark (formerly Thomson & Thomson)
helps attorneys and paralegals do online research on intellectual property topics (e.g., trademarks).
The company asked Interaction Design to help develop a better UI for the online ordering tool.
After a subsequent redesign to combine European and North American versions, we did another round
of usability testing.

Requirements
Be better organized, grouping products logically and explaining choices
Allow users to save orders and complicated research criteria for later re-use
Create a stepwise process (using familiar wizard techniques)
The result: faster and easier ordering
Customers now have an easy wizard
instead of a long, confusing one-page form. It serves
the customers and the company better, helping increase orders by 25%.
After and before images
The new design supports business requirements better, is easier to use and helped increase orders.

The new design shows most-common products first, lets users
show descriptions when needed and steps them through the process.

A partial view of the original version: a single long page that
didn't list all products or help users make choices
Helping users make choices
Thomson has a lot of products, so one requirement of the new UI was to make it easier to choose the right one. Customers can choose whether to see descriptions of products if they're not sure what to order.

Users can see descriptions for all of the products
to make ordering easier.
